The instinct in Thailand is to buy. We’re a country of small condos with limited storage, but we still tend to default to “I’ll just buy one.” The truth is, for a lot of stuff, renting is dramatically cheaper, takes up zero space, and you actually use better gear than you’d otherwise afford.
Here’s a five-minute decision framework — plus four examples worked out with real numbers.
The 3-question test
For any item over ฿2,000:
1. How many times will I realistically use this in a year? Be honest. If your answer is “well, maybe…” — that’s a “less than 5” answer.
2. Does it need storage I have to pay for? Bangkok condo space is around ฿15-20k/sqm to buy or ~฿800/sqm/month to rent. Anything bulky (suitcase, BBQ grill, projector) is taking up space you’re paying for.
3. Does the better version cost a lot more than the entry-level? For drones, cameras, and tools, the gap between “okay” and “great” is often 5–10x. Renters always have access to the great one.
If you answered “≤5 times/year” + “yes, takes space” + “yes, expensive to upgrade” — you should rent, not buy.
Example 1: Drone for a Phuket trip
Buy: DJI Mini 4 Pro — ฿28,000 Rent on Weshare: ฿700/day × 3 days = ฿2,100
Even if you take three trips a year that include drone footage, renting costs ฿6,300/year vs ฿28,000 once. Plus when DJI releases the Mini 5, the renter gets the new one for the same price.
Buy this instead if: you make drone content for income or fly weekly.
Example 2: Projector for movie nights
Buy: Decent 1080p projector — ฿15,000 Rent on Weshare: ฿400/day
If you do movie night once a month, that’s 12 nights/year × ฿400 = ฿4,800/year. Renting wins for 3+ years before buying breaks even.
But here’s the kicker: the projector lives in a box, in a cabinet, year-round. You’re paying for storage. Rent it.
Buy this instead if: you literally watch films on it weekly, like a home cinema setup.
Example 3: Big checked-bag suitcase
Buy: Decent 28″ hard-shell — ฿4,500 Rent on Weshare: ฿150/day × 7 days = ฿1,050
If you take one big 7-day trip per year, renting saves you ฿3,450 the first year. And the rest of the year, you have closet space back.
Buy this instead if: you travel internationally 3+ times a year for a week each.
Example 4: A full camping setup (tent + cooler + sleeping bags + grill)
Buy: Decent 4-person setup — ฿8,000+ Rent on Weshare: ฿700/day bundle × 2 nights = ฿1,400
Most “we should go camping” plans happen 1–2 times a year. ฿1,400 × 2 = ฿2,800/year. Buying breaks even in year 3, but only if your gear doesn’t get moldy in storage (it will).
Buy this instead if: you camp monthly. Bangkok weather makes that rare.
What’s worth buying
Some things really do beat rentals:
- Daily-use items: laptop, phone, headphones
- Personal hygiene & fitness: yoga mat, water bottle
- Things that wear in to you: hiking boots, running shoes, a good knife
- Things you genuinely love and use weekly: the camera you carry every weekend
The rule of thumb: if you’d happily lend it to a friend without complaint, you might be using it enough to own it. If lending it makes you nervous because “what if it gets damaged” — rent next time.
One more thing: the upgrade tax
When you buy, you’re locked in to that exact item. When you rent, you can try the latest gear every time. Want a Mini 4 this trip and a Sony FX3 next? Done. Want to test if you actually like camping before committing to ฿8,000 of gear? Rent first.
